ALARC Ice Dive

Jump into 2011 at the ALARC Ice Dive!  On January 1st, join in on the fun as 1,000 divers take part in the New Year’s tradition at the BayView Event Center in Excelsior, MN.  Proceeds of the event help support Camp SuperKids, a week-long summer camp for children with asthma.

Now in its 21st year, the ALARC Ice Dive continues to grow and break its own world record of ice dives in a single event!  With this growth, we have made some changes to accommodate the large number of people who decide to take the plunge every year:

  • We will have two starting times to reduce congestion – Divers with one or more previous jumps (and their families) register starting at 7:30am and their dives begin at 8:30am.  First-time divers can begin registering at 8:30am and their dives begin at 9:00am.  Registration closes at 10:00am.
  • The registration area has been expanded in the upper level of the BayView Event Center to reduce waiting times.
  • Certificates of Completion will be distributed in the Upper Level to reduce congestion downstairs.
  • Online registration has been moved to www.zapevent.com, a local company with lower fees!
  • Online registration is $20.00; Day of registration is $25.00.
  • You can print the registration form here and register on-site on January 1.

What to bring:

  • Large towel
  • Bathrobe
  • Old shoes for the dive, also a dry pair to wear on the way home
  • Cash or check if you did not pre-register.  We do not accept credit cards for on-site registration.

Where to go:

  • BayView Event Center, 687 Excelsior Boulevard in Excelsior, MN
  • Park in the lot across the street from the BayView CEnter, or on the streets of Excelsior and nearby lots where allowed.  DO NOT park in the Maynard’s parking lot.

When:

  • Registration for returning divers and their families begins at 7:30am.
  • Registration for everyone else (first-time divers) begins at 8:30am.
  • Returning divers begin their dives at 8:30am.
  • First-time divers will begin their dives after (approximately 9am).
  • NEW DIVERS – We do not recommend arriving before 8:30am so you can minimize your wait time.
  • Registration closes at 10am.
  • Pre-registered divers must arrive by 10am.

Spectators:

  • There is a viewing area close to the hole in the ice so you can see your diver(s) jump into the new year!
  • Spectators are not allowed into the registration or waiting areas in the BayView Event Center.
  • The BaySide Grille is right in the middle of the action and is open to the public starting at 7am.  The Grille will be serving coffee and hot chocolate.

Dive Process:

  • Plan your arrival time according to if you have participated in this event before.  If you have, arrive from 7:30-8:30am.  If this is your first ice dive, arrive after 8:30am.
  • When arriving at the BayView, follow the volunteers’ directions on where to park.
  • Enter the BayView Event Center and check in at the registration desk for a wristband.
  • Proceed downstairs and get into your “dive gear” (swimsuit, shoes (no flip-flops), towel, bathrobe).
  • The dive order is determined by number of previous dives.  We begin with the Orcas and end with the Guppies.  Wait until your group is called.

A few things to remember:

  • To minimize congestion and waiting time, please arrive at the BayView at the times indicated above.  First-time divers WILL NOT be allowed past the registration area before 8:30am.
  • We have moved the certificate table upstairs.  Upon finishing your dive, go to the Upper Level and pick up your certificate.
  • Divers WILL NOT be allowed to use the stairway to go to the upper level.  You must go outside and around to the front entrance.
  • You must wear shoes while diving.  Flip-flops are not allowed.  Bring an extra pair to wear home.
  • Your registration includes a breakfast burrito which can be picked up on the upper level when you get your certificate of completion.  The brunch buffet has been discontinued.
  • There are no designated changing areas, so we recommend sweatpants and warm clothes.  There are men’s and women’s bathrooms in the Lower Level, but the are small and get very crowded during the event.

Frequently asked questions:

  • What time should I get there?  If you have done this event before, arrive from 7:30-8:30.  You dive first!  If this is your first Ice Dive, arrive any time from 8:30-10am.  These divers will not be allowed in the facility before 8:30am so we can minimize congestion.
  • What should I bring?  Wear a swimsuit and old shoes, bring a large towel and an extra pair of shoes.  Wear warm clothes.  Note that we are not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Where do I park?  BayView has a parking lot across the street.  If this lot is full, park on Excelsior streets or in nearby lots.  DO NOT park in the Maynard’s parking lot.
  • Will there be a short run before the dive?  This has been discontinued.
  • Do I get breakfast?  Yes!  We will hand out breakfast burritos to divers in the upper level where you pick up your certificate of completion.  The brunch has been discontinued.
  • The line was long for the pre-registered divers last year.  Has this been addressed?  Yes.  We will open up more of the Upper Level for a registration area, as well as have more volunteers to assist those who pre-register.
  • It gets a crowded in the lower level as we wait for our turn to dive.  Has this been addressed?  Yes.  We have staggered the starting times for divers based on experience.  We also added a large tent for additional space.
